Pay per click (“PPC”, “Cost Per Click,” “Sponsored Search”) is an paid advertising technique used on search engines whereby advertisers bid on keywords appropriate for their products and services.  The ads appear as "sponsored ads" or "sponsored links" above and next to regular "organic" results.  In the example to the right, we have highlighted the pay per click ads in Google's search engine results.  The advertiser only pays when someone clicks on its ad. Your bid determines how high you rank among those competing for the same term.  Depending on the search engine, minimum pay per click prices start from $0.01 to $0.50.  These prices can reach as much as $20 per click for highly competitive and profitable keywords (e.g., the mortgage industry).  Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing (formerly Overture) are the main PPC operators, with Microsoft AdCenter (formerly MSN adCenter) now in operation as well.  Other pay per click search engines include: Ask Jeeves, Lycos, AltaVista, Overture, Miva (formerly Espotting) and AOL.

One of the simplest and easiest search engine optimization tasks is to include a robots.txt file in your website's root directory. Using Notepad, enter the text "User-agent: *" and save this file as robots.txt in your website's root directory. This file will tell search engine spiders to "crawl every page of my website". You can also block folders that you do not want analyzed (client files, old copies of pages, etc.). Simply add "Disallow: /folder_name/" or "Disallow: /filename.html".
